About SewMendStitch
SewMendStitch is a free set of step-by-step lessons for people learning needlework and everyday sewing. It covers six courses: embroidery, cross-stitch, hand sewing, the sewing machine, clothing alterations and clothing repairs, plus a stitch library, projects and a guide to materials and tools.
The site is published by Evergreen Digital Media LLC. There is no sign-up and nothing to buy to use it.
How the lessons are built
Each lesson does one job, such as threading a needle, sewing a running stitch, hemming a pair of trousers or darning a sock. It starts with what you need, then breaks the job into short numbered steps with a diagram for each one, and ends with the mistakes beginners usually make and how to fix them. Lessons link to the stitches and skills they depend on, so you can start anywhere and fill in what you're missing.
The courses are ordered from easiest to hardest. If you're new, start with the first lesson of a course and work down the list. If you already sew, use the search box or the stitch library to go straight to the technique you need.
Your progress
You can mark lessons as done. That progress is saved in your own browser only. It isn't sent to us, and clearing your browser data or switching devices resets it.
Machines and materials differ
Sewing machines differ in how they thread, wind a bobbin and select stitches. The machine lessons describe the steps most home machines share, but your manual is the final word for your model. The same goes for fabric and thread: check the care label before pressing or washing a project.
How the site is paid for
The site is free and is paid for by ads and by Amazon affiliate links to supplies on some pages. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Links never change what a lesson teaches. See the privacy policy for details.
