Tips for a neat result

  • Straps that are adjustable already can be changed with the slider. Use this method only for fixed straps.
  • Sew each strap with the same number of stitches, so they match.

Common mistakes and fixes

The strap slips off the shoulder.

It is attached too wide or too long. Re-pin closer to the neck, and test before sewing.

The strap looks bulky.

The extra length is folded inside. Trim to 1/2 in (12 mm) and finish the edge flat.

Check your result

  • Both straps are the same length and sit comfortably.
  • The neckline lies flat and the stitching is firm.
When to use a professionalTake the garment to a tailor if the straps are part of a lined bodice, have boning, include a stretch lace or if the shortening changes the neckline.
