The Basic Full Cross-Stitch
The X-shaped stitch that makes up almost every design. Learn it one at a time, then in rows.
What you will learn
- Making a single cross
- Working a row in two passes
- Keeping the top leg consistent
Materials and tools
Step by step
A single cross: up at 1, down at 2, up at 3, down at 4.
Tips for a neat result
- Say the corners aloud at first: bottom left, top right, bottom right, top left.
- Pull just until the stitch lies flat.
Common mistakes and fixes
Some crosses look different from the rest
Their top legs slant the other way. Unpick and redo them.
The back has long diagonal threads
You are completing crosses in an inconsistent order. Use the row method.
Check your result
- Every top leg slants the same direction.
- Crosses fill their squares fully and corners share holes with neighbouring stitches.
- The back shows mostly short vertical lines.
Practice exerciseStitch a block 5 squares wide and 5 high using the row method, then five separate single crosses beside it.
