  • Knot the thread.

Step by step

  1. 1234567fabric edgemarked line
Up at 1 on the edge. Down at 2 on the marked line, out past the edge at 3 with the thread under the needle. Each stitch leaves an upright bar and a thread along the edge.
  2. 1234567fabric edgemarked line
Up at 1 on the edge. Down at 2 on the marked line, out past the edge at 3 with the thread under the needle. Each stitch leaves an upright bar and a thread along the edge.

Tips for a neat result

  • Keep the loop snug but not tight.
  • Use a marked line to keep the height even.
  • Pull the loop toward the edge so the thread lies against it.

Common mistakes and fixes

Stitches are uneven in height.

The entry point drifted. Draw a guide line and enter on it each time.

The edge puckers.

Loops were pulled too tight. Pull until the thread lies flat.

The loop slides off.

The thread was not under the needle when you pulled through. Check the thread is under the tip before pulling.

Check your result

  • Upright bars stand at an equal height along the edge.
  • The loops sit neatly on the edge without puckering.
