Ladder Stitch
A hidden stitch that pulls two folded edges together like the rungs of a ladder. It is the best stitch for closing the gap in a stuffed toy or cushion.
What you will learn
- Closing a seam invisibly
- Working across a gap
- Controlling tension
Materials and tools
Before you start
- Fold the raw edges of the opening 1/4 in (6 mm) inside, so the two folds meet exactly. Pin in place.
- Knot the thread.
Step by step
Thread rungs cross the gap. Dashed lines show the thread hidden inside each fold.
Tips for a neat result
- Stitch directly across from the last exit point.
- Keep the folds crisp by pressing them before stitching.
- Pull the thread gently but firmly for the best closure.
Common mistakes and fixes
Thread shows between the folds.
Stitches were too long or not pulled tight. Make them shorter and pull the thread firm.
The seam looks crooked.
Stitches were not directly opposite each other. Match the entry and exit points.
The opening puckers.
The thread was pulled too tight on one side. Ease the tension and re-pull evenly.
Check your result
- The two folded edges meet and look like a continuous seam.
- No stitches are visible on the front.
Practice exerciseMake a small 5 in (13 cm) cotton pillow. Leave a 3 in (8 cm) gap, stuff the pillow, and close it with ladder stitch.
