Out of the hem fold at 1, a one-thread catch of the trouser at 2 and 3, back into the fold at 4 and along it to 5.

Tips for a neat result

  • Measure both legs separately, as legs can differ.
  • Use catch stitch if the fabric is thick or stretchy.
  • Press the hem before you sew, so that it is crisp.

Common mistakes and fixes

The hem is uneven.

The legs were measured by eye. Measure and mark both legs from the crotch seam.

Stitches show on the front.

The catches were too deep. Pick up a single thread.

The hem puckers or pulls.

The thread is too tight. Loosen it and re-sew.

Check your result

  • Both legs are the same length, with the hem just touching the top of the shoe.
  • The hem lies flat and stitches are barely visible on the right side.
