What you will learn

  • Measuring seam allowance
  • Unpicking a seam
  • Re-sewing within the allowance

Materials and tools

Before you start

  • Turn the garment inside out and measure the seam allowance with a seam gauge at several points.

Tips for a neat result

  • Leave the old seam alone if the stitch holes are likely to show. Consider instead a different style of change.
  • Let out each side equally for balanced fit.

Common mistakes and fixes

The seam ripped open when I put it on.

The remaining allowance was too narrow. Finish the edges and keep at least 1/4 in (6 mm).

Visible holes remain along the old seam.

Pressing did not close them. On some fabrics this is permanent. Try steaming, or place the new line to cover them.

Check your result

  • The garment is more comfortable and no seam is strained.
  • No stitch holes or crease marks show, or they are acceptable.
When to use a professionalTake the garment to a tailor if it has little seam allowance, delicate fabric, or visible stitch marks you cannot accept. A tailor can also add a panel or a gusset (a shaped insert of fabric) to gain more width.
