- Keeping an even seam allowance
- Pressing seams open
Materials and tools
Before you start
- Check the needle plate guide lines. They are measured from the needle. Common markings are 3/8 in, 1/2 in, 5/8 in or 10, 15 and 20 mm. Models differ, so check the manual.
Step by step
Tips for a neat result
- Sew a trial seam on scrap with the same fabric before starting the project.
- On a curved edge, keep your eyes on the guide, not the needle.
Common mistakes and fixes
The seam width changes from one end to the other.
The fabric edge moved away from the guide. Watch the guide and steer slowly.
The finished piece is smaller than the pattern.
The seam allowance was wider than the pattern needed. Use the allowance the pattern lists.
Check your result
- Three measurements along the seam agree within 1/16 in (1.5 mm).
- The pressed seam lies flat.
