Taking in and letting out

Take In a Waistband at Centre Back

Make trousers or jeans smaller at the waist by removing fabric at the centre back of the waistband. Jeans are a harder job because of the bulk.

What you will learn

  • Opening a waistband
  • Matching a new seam to the old one
  • Sewing through thick layers

Materials and tools

Before you start

  • Put the trousers on. Pinch out the extra fabric at the centre back until the waist fits and the garment sits correctly. Measure the total amount pinched out, which is twice the depth of the fold. Divide the total by two. This is the amount to remove from each side of the centre back seam.

Tips for a neat result

  • Check where the back pockets sit. Taking in the centre back pulls them slightly closer together.
  • Do the work in two small steps instead of one large one, trying on between.

Common mistakes and fixes

The back of the waistband dips or pulls.

The seam taper is too sudden. Make the new seam line more gradual, over a longer distance.

The waistband no longer fits the trousers.

Waist reductions of more than 2 in (5 cm) distort the back pockets and the yoke (the shaped panel below the waistband at the back). Consider a different alteration or a professional.

Safety and fabric care
  • Needles break easily in thick denim. Wear eye protection and sew slowly.

Check your result

  • The waist fits comfortably and the trousers sit at the right height.
  • The seat and pockets still look balanced.
  • The centre back seam is smooth.
When to use a professionalTake the garment to a tailor if you need to remove more than 2 in (5 cm), if the waistband is curved or lined, or if the back yoke has a pattern or seam you must match. Jeans with heavy rivets are also best left to a professional.
