What you will learn

  • Controlling speed
  • Guiding fabric lightly
  • Keeping an even distance from the edge

Materials and tools

Before you start

  • Set a straight stitch at 2.5 mm. Draw a line 1/2 in (12 mm) from the edge of one strip with a ruler and chalk.

Step by step

  1. 5/8 in (1.5 cm)two layers,right sides togetherpressed openseam allowances

Tips for a neat result

  • A steady slow speed gives better control than a fast one.
  • Watch the fabric edge against the guide line on the needle plate, not the needle.

Common mistakes and fixes

The line wanders.

You are watching the needle or pulling the fabric. Watch the guide line and let the machine feed.

The two layers slip so one ends up longer.

Pins are too far apart or the top layer is feeding faster. Pin more and guide lightly. A walking foot, if your machine has one, helps.

Thread breaks at the start.

Tails were not held, or the needle is dull. Hold the tails for the first few stitches and replace the needle if needed.

Safety and fabric care
  • Keep fingers at least 1 in (2.5 cm) from the needle. Do not sew over pins unless your manual allows it, because a needle that strikes a pin can break.

Check your result

  • The stitch line is straight, with even stitches on both sides.
  • The two layers match at the end with no extra fabric on one.
Practice exerciseSew five parallel lines 1/2 in (12 mm) apart across a scrap, staying on the marked lines.
