Machine-Sewn Visible Hem

What you will learn
- Double-fold hem
- Straight stitching
- Pressing a fold
Materials and tools
Before you start
- Mark the hem length on the body, confirm it, and trim to the planned allowance. Follow the manual to thread the machine. Wind a bobbin with the same thread.
Step by step
Tips for a neat result
- Use the free arm on trousers, if your machine has one. Pull the leg over the arm.
- Select a longer stitch for thick fabric, up to 3 mm.
Common mistakes and fixes
The hem line wavers.
You looked at the needle. Watch the edge of the foot or the guide line on the plate, and go slowly.
The hem puckers.
The thread tension may be too tight or the stitch too short. Test on scrap, and consult the machine manual.
Safety and fabric care
- Switch off and unplug before changing the needle. Keep fingers clear of the needle. Do not pull the fabric while sewing.
Check your result
- The stitching line is straight and even, 1/8 in (3 mm) from the fold.
- The hem is flat with no raw edges showing.
When to use a professionalTake the garment to a tailor if the fabric is very thick, very fine or stretches heavily.
