Tips for a neat result

  • A skirt hangs differently on a body than on a table. Always mark while wearing it.
  • Let a full skirt hang overnight before marking, since fabric cut on the bias (diagonally across the weave) stretches and drops.

Common mistakes and fixes

The hem has puckers and tucks.

The curved edge is longer than the line it is folded onto. Ease the fullness with gathering stitches and press with steam.

The hem dips at one side.

The skirt hung unevenly when marked, or the waistband sits crooked. Mark from the floor with a hem marker while the skirt hangs naturally.

Check your result

  • The hem is level all around at the right length.
  • The hem lies flat and the stitches are almost invisible.
When to use a professionalTake the skirt to a tailor if it is lined, pleated, made of sheer fabric or has a pattern that needs matching. Full circle skirts and bias cut hems are best left to a professional.
