Tips for a neat result

  • On a curved hem, sew in short sections and pivot gently, instead of pulling the fabric around.
  • Shorter hems on lightweight fabrics hang better with a narrow hem.

Common mistakes and fixes

The curved hem ripples.

The allowance was too wide for the curve. Reduce it to 1/2 in (12 mm), then ease and steam.

The hem line is jagged.

The mark was not smooth. Re-mark with a long ruler or curved ruler and pin at close intervals.

Check your result

  • The hem is the right length when sitting and standing.
  • The curve is smooth with no tucks on the right side.
When to use a professionalTake the dress to a tailor if it is lined, has a sheer overlayer, a bias cut, a lace hem, a handkerchief hem or heavy beading.
