French Knot
A small raised dot made by wrapping the thread round the needle before going back down.
What you will learn
- Wrapping the needle
- Holding thread tension
- Placing knots
Materials and tools
Before you start
- Put the fabric in the hoop so it is drum-tight.
- Cut 18 in (45 cm) of floss, separate the strands you need, thread the needle and knot one end.
Step by step
Tips for a neat result
- Thread tension is the whole trick. Hold it taut until the very last moment.
- For a bigger knot use more strands. More than two or three wraps makes a loose, floppy knot.
Common mistakes and fixes
The knot disappears through the fabric
You went down in the same hole. Move over one or two threads.
The knot is loose and loopy
The thread went slack while pulling through. Keep it taut for longer.
A tangle forms on top
The wraps were not snug against the fabric before you pulled through.
Check your result
- A firm round bump sits on the surface.
- It does not wobble or unravel when rubbed.
Practice exerciseStitch a cluster of 15 knots packed together, then a row of 5 with 1, 2 and 3 wraps to compare.
