Elastic Casing Waistband
A fabric tunnel (casing) along a waist or cuff edge that holds a length of elastic, as used in simple skirts, shorts and pajama trousers.
What you will learn
- Folding and sewing a casing
- Threading elastic
- Closing the casing gap
Materials and tools
Before you start
- Measure the elastic around the body where it will sit. It should be snug but comfortable. Cut it to length, plus 1 in (2.5 cm) for overlapping.
Step by step
Tips for a neat result
- Do not twist the elastic in the casing.
- Make the casing a little wider than the elastic so it can move easily.
Common mistakes and fixes
The elastic twists inside the casing.
It was twisted when threaded. Pull it out and rethread, keeping it flat.
The casing is too tight to thread.
It was sewn too close to the width of the elastic. Make the casing at least 1/4 in (6 mm) wider than the elastic.
The waistband is too loose or too tight.
The elastic was cut to the wrong length. Adjust before closing the gap.
Check your result
- The gathers are even all around.
- The elastic stretches smoothly and returns.
