How to Sew Without Puckering

Puckering happens when stitches pull the fabric into tiny wrinkles. These habits keep your seams flat.

  • Smoothing a seam as you sew

Stitches of equal length with equal gaps. The thread lies flat, with no slack and no strain.

Tips for a neat result

  • Use a finer thread for lightweight fabric, such as 60-weight polyester.
  • Use a fine needle (size 9 or 10) on thin fabric. A thick needle drags threads.
  • On stretchy fabric, leave a little slack in the thread so the seam can stretch.

Common mistakes and fixes

The seam looks wavy and gathered.

Stitches were pulled too tight. Unpick and sew again, pulling until the thread just lies flat.

One layer pushes ahead of the other.

Layers were not pinned. Pin them and match the edges before sewing.

Thread twists into small knots as you sew.

The thread is too long or twisted. Shorten it and untwist it often.

Check your result

  • The fabric lies flat on both sides of the seam.
  • The thread sits on the surface without cutting into the fabric.
