Common mistakes and fixes
The seam comes apart again.
The fabric is worn or frayed. Cut away the damaged part and re-sew, or take the garment to a tailor.
The new stitching is visible.
The new line is off the original. Re-sew on the old stitch holes, or use a thread matched to the fabric.
Check your result
- The seam is closed and flat, and the waistband sits correctly.
- The stitching matches the original line.
Stop it happening againAvoid pulling the waistband when putting the garment on. Reinforce the seam by sewing a second row of stitching over weak spots.
When to use a professionalTake the garment to a tailor if the fabric beside the seam has frayed away, if the waistband is interfaced or lined, or if the opening is long.
